A LatePass pushes back the due date of one assignment, or reopens it after the due date has passed. Your instructor decides whether you get LatePasses, how many you get, which assignments accept them, and how much extra time each one gives.

Redeem a LatePass

From your LMS

  1. Open the assignment from your LMS, as usual.

  2. On the assignment’s opening page, under the due date, look for “You can redeem one LatePass to extend the due date to” a date, with a Redeem LatePass button. If the assignment is already past due, the page says “You can redeem one LatePass to reopen this assessment until” a date instead. If it has been past due for longer than one LatePass covers, reopening it takes more than one LatePass. For example, the page says “You can redeem 2 LatePasses to reopen this assessment until” a date, and the button reads Redeem 2 LatePasses. Redeeming uses all of them.

  3. Click Redeem LatePass (if more than one is needed, it says, for example, Redeem 2 LatePasses). Inside the assignment, the same option is in the ⋮ More options menu at the top: choose Redeem LatePass, then click Yes, Redeem LatePass(es) on the page that opens.

  4. If the assignment is open and not yet due, a box asks you to confirm: click Redeem LatePass in it. On a past-due assignment, or one that hasn’t opened yet, there is no confirm step, so clicking the button uses the LatePass (or LatePasses) right away. The new due date then shows on the assignment’s opening page.

At xyzhomework.com

  1. Sign in and open your course page.

  2. Find the assignment. If you can use a LatePass on it, there is a Use LatePass link next to it. A past-due assignment shows “This assessment was due” with the date, then Use LatePass. If your instructor keeps it open for practice after the due date, it shows “Past Due Date of” the date and “Showing as Practice” instead, then Use LatePass.

  3. Click Use LatePass. The Redeem LatePass page shows how many LatePasses you have left, and how many hours of extension one LatePass gives on this assignment (or the latest date it can extend to), and asks “Are you sure you want to redeem a LatePass?”. If the assignment has been past due for longer than one LatePass covers, the page instead says how many you would need, for example “You would need 2 LatePasses to reopen this assignment”, and asks “Are you sure you want to redeem 2 LatePasses?”. Redeeming uses all of them.

  4. Click Yes, Redeem LatePass(es).

You can also open the assignment itself and use the Redeem LatePass button on its opening page, as in the LMS steps.

For LatePasses in an LMS course, see Where is the LatePass button when I open assignments from Canvas or another LMS? on the support page.

How many do I have?

  • Where you can use a LatePass, the assignment shows the count: for example “You have one LatePass available.” on a past-due assignment, or “You have” a number “LatePass(es) remaining.” on the Redeem LatePass page.
  • At xyzhomework.com, your course’s Gradebook page may also show it, for example “One LatePass available”, if your instructor has turned that on.
  • The list of assignments on your course page doesn’t show the count.
  • If you don’t see a button on an assignment, you can’t use a LatePass on it right now.

What a LatePass can’t do

  • It doesn’t add time to a timed test. It moves the due date only. It doesn’t extend or pause a time limit.
  • It doesn’t give you another attempt.
  • It doesn’t open an assignment early. Don’t use one on an assignment that hasn’t opened yet. Its “not yet available” page can still show Redeem LatePass, and clicking it uses the LatePass right away. See An assignment won’t open.

Practice mode blocks a LatePass

A past-due assignment may offer Practice or View scored assessment. The page warns: “If you do so, you will not be able to later use a LatePass.” If you might want to use a LatePass, do that first.

If you don’t see the LatePass button

The usual reasons:

  • you have no LatePasses left, or it’s past due and reopening it would take more LatePasses than you have,
  • your instructor doesn’t allow LatePasses on that assignment,
  • it’s past due, and your instructor allows LatePasses on it only before the due date,
  • you’ve already used as many LatePasses on it as your instructor allows, or it’s so far past due that reopening it would take more than that,
  • the assignment has no due date, or is due at or after the end of the course,
  • the last day for using a LatePass on it has passed,
  • it’s an assignment you submit as a whole (not question by question), and you’ve used all your attempts on it, or
  • you already opened it in practice or looked at the scored assignment.

Your instructor can tell you which one applies. LatePasses, extensions and due dates are their decision.
