You opened an XYZ Homework assignment from Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle and saw one of these messages:

Error opening link. Go back and open from the LMS again. If you continue to get this error, ensure you have 3rd party cookies enabled. If it is an option, try opening in a new tab/window.

Error. Go back and open from the LMS again. If you continue to get this error, ensure you have 3rd party cookies enabled. If it is an option, try opening in a new tab/window.

Error: State not found. Go back and open from the LMS again. If you continue to get this issue, ensure you have 3rd party cookies enabled. If it is an option, try opening in a new tab/window.

If your course uses an older kind of XYZ Homework link, you may see one of these instead:

No authorized session exists. This is most likely caused by your browser blocking third-party cookies. Please adjust your browser settings and try again. If you are using Safari, you may need to disable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.

Insufficient launch information. This might indicate your browser is set to restrict third-party cookies. Check your browser settings and try again. If you are using Safari, you may need to disable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.

Unable to establish a session. This is most likely caused by your browser blocking third-party cookies. Please adjust your browser settings and try again.

What this means

Your LMS may show XYZ Homework inside its own course page. Browser privacy settings can restrict the cookies used to sign in on an embedded page. A launch or session problem can also prevent the assignment from opening. The message alone doesn’t identify the cause.

The last sentence of the first three messages is the part to follow: open the assignment in a new tab or window.

Try this now

  1. Go back to your course in the LMS and click the assignment again. Don’t refresh the error page.

  2. If the message comes back, look for a way to open the assignment in its own tab. If your LMS shows a button or option to open the assignment in a new tab or window, use that. If you don’t see one, send your instructor the message below.

  3. With the newer kind of link (the one that shows the first three messages above), XYZ Homework may open a new tab or window by itself. If it does, work there. That’s normal. If you see “Popup blocked, click to open in a new window”, click that message to open the assignment. If you want it to open by itself next time, you can allow pop-ups for your LMS’s website (the address in the address bar while you’re in your course). If the line says “New window opened, click to reopen”, the assignment is already open in another tab or window: switch to it.

Try the assignment in its own tab

Start with the assignment link in your LMS and use its new-tab or new-window option if one is available. Browsers handle embedded sign-in differently. If the assignment still won’t open on its own page, tell your instructor or support which browser you use and copy the exact message.

If the assignment still stays blank or keeps asking you to sign in, see XYZ Homework is blank or asks me to sign in again. For more about “State not found”, see State not found on the XYZ Homework troubleshooting page.

Who can fix it

  • You: open the assignment in a new tab or window, as above.
  • Your instructor: may be able to set the assignment’s link to open in a new tab, so it opens on its own page instead of inside your course page. It may not be possible for every link. The instructor steps for each LMS are on the XYZ Homework troubleshooting page.
  • Your college’s LMS team: in Blackboard, only the LMS administrator can make that setting.
  • XYZ Homework support: if the assignment won’t open in a new tab or window either, contact support.

When I open XYZ Homework assignments from our course, I get an error about cookies, and I can’t find a way to open the assignments in a new tab or window. Could you check whether the XYZ Homework links in our course can be set to open in a new tab or window? The steps for each LMS are at https://www.xyzhomework.com/lti/troubleshooting.
