You clicked an XYZ Homework assignment in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle, and one of these happened:

  • The space where the assignment should be stays blank, or shows only one line, such as “Popup blocked, click to open in a new window”, “New window opened, click to reopen” or “If you are not automatically redirected, click here to continue”.
  • The page keeps loading and the assignment never appears.
  • You land on a sign-in page, sign in, and end up on a sign-in page again.

What this means

When your LMS embeds XYZ Homework inside its course page, browser privacy settings can interfere with sign-in. Launch or session problems can cause similar symptoms. Try opening the assignment from your LMS on its own page, in a new tab or window. If it still fails there, your instructor or support can help check it.

Try this now

  1. Look for a way to open the assignment in its own tab. If the blank space shows “If you are not automatically redirected, click here to continue”, click that line. If it shows “Popup blocked, click to open in a new window” or “New window opened, click to reopen”, go to step 2. If your LMS shows a button or option to open the assignment in a new tab or window, use that. If you see none of these, go on to step 3, and send your instructor the message below.

  2. If a new tab or window opens by itself, work there. That’s normal. If you see “Popup blocked, click to open in a new window”, click that message to open the assignment. If you want it to open by itself next time, you can allow pop-ups for your LMS’s website (the address in the address bar while you’re in your course). If the line says “New window opened, click to reopen”, the assignment is already open in another tab or window: switch to it (on a phone, tap the tabs button). If you can’t find it, click that line to open it again. See what the pop-up message means.

  3. Start from the link in your LMS. Don’t use a bookmark, your browser history or a tab you left open earlier. Go to your course in the LMS and click the assignment there.

  4. Close extra XYZ Homework tabs, then try once more. If you have several XYZ Homework tabs or windows open, first submit or save anything you’re working on in them, then close them. Open one assignment from your LMS and wait for it to load before you open another.

Taking a test in LockDown Browser?

You can’t open a new tab in LockDown Browser. If the test stays blank or keeps asking you to sign in, stop and tell your instructor right away. Give them the test name and the time it happened, so they can decide what to do.

A message about cookies

Some XYZ Homework error messages mention cookies. Start by reopening the assignment from your LMS and trying its new-tab or new-window option. If you’re seeing that message, read the message about cookies.

If you see a short error message instead of a blank space, for example one that starts with “Error:” or says your session expired, see Your session has expired.

Who can fix it

  • You: open the assignment in a new tab or window each time, as above.
  • Your instructor: may be able to set the assignment’s link to open in a new tab, so it opens on its own page instead of inside your course page. It may not be possible for every link. If it keeps happening, let your instructor know which assignments open blank. The instructor steps are on the XYZ Homework troubleshooting page for Canvas, D2L Brightspace and Moodle.
  • Your college’s LMS team: in Blackboard, the new-window setting is made by the LMS administrator, not by the instructor. See the Blackboard steps.
  • XYZ Homework support: if the assignment still won’t open in a new tab or window, contact support.

Copy this to your instructor

XYZ Homework assignments in our course open blank (or keep asking me to sign in) when they load inside the course page. They work when I open them in a new tab or window. Could you check whether the XYZ Homework links in our course can be set to open in a new tab? The instructor steps for each LMS are at https://www.xyzhomework.com/lti/troubleshooting.
