You clicked an XYZ Homework assignment in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle and saw:
Course link not established yet. Notify your instructor they need to click this assignment to set it up.
Some courses show a slightly different wording: “Course connection not established yet. Notify your instructor they need to click this link to set it up.”
What this means
Your LMS course hasn’t been connected to your instructor’s XYZ Homework course yet. Your instructor makes that connection once, for the whole course. Nothing you did caused this, and there is nothing for you to set up.
Try this now
-
Let your instructor know. You can send the message below.
-
After your instructor says the course is connected, go back to your course in the LMS and click the assignment again. If XYZ Homework then asks you to Sign In or Create Account, read XYZ Homework asks me to Sign In or Create Account before you choose.
Don't work around it with a Course ID
Wait for your instructor to connect the course, and then open your work from your LMS. Don’t join the class at xyzhomework.com with a Course ID instead: work done that way may not reach your LMS gradebook.
If an assignment is due soon, say so when you write. Due dates and extensions are set by your instructor.
Who can fix it
- Your instructor: opens any one XYZ Homework link in the course and finishes the one-time setup. That connects every XYZ Homework link in the course at once. See Course link not established on the troubleshooting page.
- You: tell your instructor, then open the assignment again from your LMS once the course is connected.
- XYZ Homework support: can help your instructor if the setup doesn’t work.
Copy this to your instructor
When I click an XYZ Homework assignment in our course, I see “Course link not established yet. Notify your instructor they need to click this assignment to set it up.” Could you open any XYZ Homework link in the course once to finish connecting it? I’ll open the assignment again after that.
Other messages only your instructor can fix
-
“Error: Linked assessment appears to have been deleted. Ref:” followed by a reference code. The link in your course points to an XYZ Homework assignment that no longer exists. Your instructor needs to fix that link. Other assignments in the course are not affected. See Linked assessment deleted on the troubleshooting page.
-
“This assignment does not appear to exist anymore.” or “The originally linked assignment does not appear to exist anymore.” This is the same problem on some courses. More text follows the message on the same page; copy all of it for your instructor, who needs to fix that link.
-
“This link points to an assessment in a different course than this LMS course is connected to. Your instructor needs to re-select the content for this link.” Your instructor chooses the assignment for that link again.
-
“Tell your teacher that the LMS is not sending due dates.” (some courses say “Canvas” instead of “the LMS”). This assignment is set to take its due date from your LMS, but the LMS didn’t send one when you opened it. Your instructor needs to fix this, either by changing how the LMS sends due dates to XYZ Homework (the XYZ Homework tool’s settings in the LMS, which may need your school’s LMS administrator) or by having the assignment use due dates set in XYZ Homework instead. Adding a due date to the assignment in the LMS doesn’t always fix it.
-
“This course is not available”. The XYZ Homework course this link points to is closed or hidden. Tell your instructor.
-
The assignment opens, but it’s from a different course (for example, the wrong book or last term’s course). Don’t do the work there. Tell your instructor, and include the assignment name and a screenshot.
For any of these, send your instructor the exact message, including any reference code.
