Accommodations such as extra time come through your college’s disability services office and your instructor. Your instructor then sets them up in XYZ Homework, so ask your instructor rather than XYZ Homework support.

Get extra time set up

  1. Get the accommodation approved by your college’s disability services office (the name varies by college), and make sure your instructor has the approval letter or notice.

  2. Ask your instructor to set it in XYZ Homework, not only in your LMS. Extra time set on quizzes in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle does not carry into XYZ Homework. Your instructor sets a Time Limit Multiplier for you in the XYZ Homework course roster.

  3. Ask before your first timed test. The multiplier is meant to be set ahead of time. If your time on an attempt has already run out, see What to do after your instructor adds extra time.

Check that it worked

Open a timed assignment, but don’t start it yet. The start screen lists “Time limit:” followed by your time, with the extra time already included. Below it you see a line starting “Extended from the original” that names the original time limit.

If you don’t see that line, your extra time isn’t set for this course. Contact your instructor before you select Start.

The due date can still cut your time short

Extra time doesn’t move the due date. If the due date comes before your extended time runs out, your time ends at the due date. Don’t count on a warning. The start screen’s “Because of the upcoming due date, your time limit will expire at the due date” message is based on the original time limit, not your extended one, so it may not appear even when the due date will cut your extra time short. Start at least your full extended time before the due date, or ask your instructor about the due date as well.

The multiplier applies to your timed assignments in that XYZ Homework course. If you take more than one course, each instructor sets it in their own course.

Other accommodations

  • Due dates and extensions are your instructor’s decisions. Ask your instructor.
  • Keyboard graphing, screen readers, math display and high contrast are settings you can change yourself. See Accessibility features and settings.

I have an approved accommodation for [for example, 1.5 times] the time on timed tests, from [your college’s disability services office]. Extra time set in [LMS] doesn’t carry into XYZ Homework, so could you set a Time Limit Multiplier for me in the XYZ Homework course roster (in the Roster, click my name) before our next timed test? Thank you.
