Your instructor says they gave you more time on a timed test. But when you open the test, you still see “Your current assessment time limit expired at” a date and time.
What this means
When your instructor adds time after your timer has run out, the extra time waits for you. It starts only when you open the test again and click Resume.
If your timer was still running when your instructor added the time, the time was added to that timer straight away.
If your instructor added the time before you had started the test, it isn’t kept, and the test starts with the normal time limit. Extra time added this way also applies only to your most recent attempt. For extra time on every timed test, your instructor uses a Time Limit Multiplier instead (see Extra time and other accommodations).
Try this now
-
Open the test again, the same way as before: from your LMS, or from your course page at xyzhomework.com.
-
Look for a line that starts “You have been given a” and ends “minute extension on the time limit”, with the number of minutes in between. That means the extra time is waiting for you.
-
Get ready first. Click Resume. XYZ Homework asks if you are ready to start; click Start. The extra minutes start counting from that click.
-
Finish the test. On a test with Submit and End at the top, click it, confirm, and wait for the summary page. On homework-style timed work (a Submit button under each question), click Submit on each question before the extra time runs out.
No extension message? Don't click Submit it now yet
If you see the “time limit expired” message with a Submit it now button and no extension message, the extra time isn’t on this test in XYZ Homework yet. On homework-style timed work (a Submit button under each question), you may see “The timelimit has expired on this assessment.” instead, with no Submit it now button; that also means the extra time isn’t on this test yet. Submit it now ends the test with the answers that were saved. Ask your instructor to check the extra time first.
If the test page also says “This assessment was due” and a date, the due date has passed too. While the test is past due, XYZ Homework shows no extension message and no Resume button. The extra time can also never run past the due date. So your instructor needs to give you a later due date for this test as well as the extra time: in XYZ Homework, or in your LMS if the test gets its due date from there. Ask for the extra time and a later due date in the same message.
Extra time that your instructor or college set in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle doesn’t carry over. XYZ Homework doesn’t read extra time set in your LMS, so your instructor has to set it in XYZ Homework.
Who can fix it
- You: open the test again and click Resume when the extension message shows.
- Your instructor: adds the extra time in XYZ Homework, on this test, for you. For extra time on every timed test (for example, an accommodation), they set it in advance for you in XYZ Homework. Time limits, extensions and accommodations are their decision.
- XYZ Homework support: can help your instructor check an extension that still does not appear. Extra time set only in the LMS does not reach XYZ Homework.
Copy this to your instructor
Thank you for the extra time on [test name]. When I open the test in XYZ Homework, it still says my time limit expired. I don’t see a Resume button or a message about extra minutes. Could you check that the extra time is set in XYZ Homework itself, on this test, with “If time limit is active or expired, allow additional time”? Extra time set in [LMS name] doesn’t carry over to XYZ Homework. If the test is past its due date, could you also give me a later due date for it? (If this test gets its due date from [LMS name], a new date may need to be set there too.)
