Your instructor sets each assignment up in one of two styles. The buttons tell you which one you have, and that decides what counts toward your grade.
On a test-style assignment you may also see Check Answer under each question. If you don’t, there is no Submit or Check Answer button under the questions. You may see Next Question (when the test shows one question at a time) or Next Part (on a step-by-step question), or no button at all.
Homework style: submit each question
-
Type or draw your answer. To redraw a graph, click Clear All. It erases everything on that graph and can’t be undone.
-
Click Submit under the question. A question with several parts that are graded together says Submit All Parts. A step-by-step question, where you answer one part at a time, says Submit Part.
-
Read the result. Above the question you see “Score on last try:” followed by your points, then “See Details for more.” Typed answer boxes may also be marked with a check or an X. If your instructor hides scores, you see “Question submitted.” instead.
-
If your answer isn’t fully correct and you have tries left, you see “You can retry this question below”. Change your answer and click Submit again. You may also see Get a similar question, which gives you a new version of the question.
-
If the assignment shows one question at a time, click Next question to move on (the last question has none), or pick a question from the menu above the question. If all the questions are on one page, scroll down to the next one. If they are split into pages, click Next Page at the bottom or use the page menu at the top.
Answers you type but never submit are not scored. Your instructor may be able to see them in the gradebook, but whether they get any credit is their decision. Click Submit on every question you answer. The top of the page may say “Progress saved” or show a Save progress button. That only saves your typing. It doesn’t submit anything.
If you click Submit without changing anything, you see “Your answers have not changed since your last submission.” Change your answer first.
Some homework has a Done button at the top. It takes you to your score summary. It doesn’t submit anything.
Test style: submit at the end
-
Answer the questions. Your answers save as you work. The top of the page says “Progress saved”, or shows a Save progress button when there is something new to save.
-
If there is a Check Answer button under a question, it checks that one question now, shows the result, and uses one of your tries. (A question with several parts that are graded together says Check All Parts. A step-by-step question, where you answer one part at a time, says Check Part Answer.)
-
If the test shows one question at a time, use the question list above the question, or the arrows beside it, to move between questions. If there is no Check Answer button, there is also a Next Question button under each question except the last. If there is a Check Answer button, Next question appears in your result after you check an answer (except on the last question).
-
When you have finished, click Submit and End at the top. You are asked “After submitting, you will not be able to change your answers on this version of the assessment. Are you ready to submit?” If you skipped a question, the message starts “There appears to be unattempted questions.”
-
Wait for the summary page. It shows your score, or says “Your assessment has been submitted.”
Save progress is not Submit
Save progress only saves your answers. Until Submit and End goes through and you see the summary page, the current attempt is still in progress and does not count toward your recorded grade. A grade from an earlier completed attempt may still appear in XYZ Homework or your LMS. Don’t close the tab or your laptop until the summary page appears. If that already happened, see My work didn’t save, or my test still says it’s in progress.
Tries and similar questions
The header of each question shows your points, plus small icons with the number of tries you have left and how many more times you can get a similar question. An icon disappears when that number reaches zero. See Tries, versions and Get a similar question.
How many tries you get, and whether you can retake a test, is set by your instructor.
