You finished a test, or thought you did, but your latest attempt has not been recorded as submitted. When you open it again, you may see one of these:
- A Resume button (on a test that allows more than one attempt, together with “You have an assessment attempt in progress.”)
- “You have an unsubmitted assessment attempt.” with a Submit it now button
Or your homework answers seem to be missing.
What this means
On a test-style assignment (the kind with Submit and End at the top), your answers save as you work, but the test counts only when the final submit reaches XYZ Homework. If the tab closed, the laptop lid shut or the connection dropped before that, the attempt may stay open. That attempt doesn’t count toward your recorded grade until it is submitted. A grade from an earlier completed attempt may still appear in XYZ Homework or your LMS. It can look finished to you even though it isn’t: a device can lose its connection right after your last answer saves. Your saved answers are usually still there.
On a homework-style assignment (a Submit button under each question), each question counts when you click Submit on it. An answer you typed but never submitted isn’t scored. Your instructor may be able to see it in the gradebook, but whether it gets any credit is their decision. Click Submit on each question before you leave.
Try this now
-
Open the assignment again, the same way as before: from your LMS, or from your course page at xyzhomework.com.
-
If a test (the kind with Submit and End) shows a Resume button, the test is still open. On a test that allows more than one attempt, the page also says “You have an assessment attempt in progress.” Click Resume, check your answers, click Submit and End, and wait for the summary page.
-
If you see “You have an unsubmitted assessment attempt.” or “You have an unsubmitted assessment attempt whose time limit has expired.” with a Submit it now button, click it to submit the answers that were saved. If you were hoping to finish the test instead, don’t click it yet. If the same page offers Redeem LatePass (or, for example, Redeem 2 LatePasses), clicking that button uses the LatePass right away, with no confirm step, and reopens the test so you can click Resume. A LatePass moves only the due date: it adds no time to a time limit, so it can’t give you more time on a timer that has run out. See Using a LatePass. Otherwise, ask your instructor for more time before you click Submit it now: once it’s submitted, you can’t change your answers yourself.
-
If you see “Your current assessment time limit expired at” a date and time, with Submit it now, the timer ran out before the test was submitted. Click Submit it now, or ask your instructor for more time first. See My instructor gave me extra time, but the test is still closed.
-
If none of these buttons appears on a test with Submit and End, your instructor can submit the attempt for you. Send them the message below.
-
On homework with a Submit button under each question: open it again and check each question. If your answer is there but wasn’t submitted, click Submit. If it’s gone, type it again and submit it. If the due date has passed, see An assignment won’t open for a LatePass, or ask your instructor for an extension.
Wait for the summary page
After you click Submit and End, don’t close the tab, shut the lid or switch off Wi-Fi until the summary page appears. It shows your score, or says “Your assessment has been submitted.” If you try to leave an unsubmitted test through a link, XYZ Homework warns you: “You have not submitted your assessment for grading yet. Don’t forget to come back and do that.”
If the due date arrives while you are working, a Due Date Reached box appears. If it says “You have work that has not yet been submitted for grading.” or “This assessment attempt has not been submitted for grading.”, click Submit for grading.
Who can fix it
- You: reopen the assignment and submit it, with Resume then Submit and End, or with Submit it now, if the page offers either.
- Your instructor: can open your attempt in the XYZ Homework gradebook and click Submit it now, which submits your saved answers. This works only on test-style assignments. Your instructor can also give you an extension so you can finish. Extensions and grades are their decision.
- XYZ Homework support: if your answers are really missing, or pages keep failing to load. See also Pages spin or won’t load.
If the test is now submitted and graded in XYZ Homework but the score isn’t in your LMS, see My score is in XYZ Homework but not in my LMS.
Copy this to your instructor
My latest attempt on [assignment name] still shows as in progress. I worked on it on [date and time], but my final submit doesn’t seem to have gone through. Could you open my attempt in the XYZ Homework gradebook and click “Submit it now” to submit my saved answers? Or, if you prefer, could you give me an extension so I can finish and submit it myself? (If this assignment gets its due date from [LMS name], the new date may need to be set there too.)
