You finished an XYZ Homework assignment and can see a score for it in XYZ Homework, but the gradebook in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle is blank, shows a dash, or shows 0.

What this means

XYZ Homework sends a score to your LMS gradebook for each graded XYZ Homework assignment set up in your LMS course, and only for the XYZ Homework account connected to that course. If the assignment isn’t set up in your LMS yet, or your work is on an account or in a course that isn’t connected, the score may not reach your LMS. The student page may not show why a grade is missing, so check the steps below in order.

Try this now

  1. Wait a few minutes, then reload your LMS gradebook. Scores are sent to your LMS in the background, so they can take a little while to appear.

  2. Make sure the assignment was submitted. On an assignment you submit all at once, with a Submit and End button, your current attempt doesn’t count toward the recorded grade until it is submitted, even if you already see scores on some questions. An earlier completed attempt may already have a grade. Click Submit and End when you’re done. If its start screen shows a Resume button, or says “You have an assessment attempt in progress.”, that attempt isn’t submitted yet. See My work didn’t save, or it says “in progress”.

  3. From now on, open every assignment from your LMS. Click its XYZ Homework link in your LMS course and do the work there. Opening an assignment you already submitted won’t resend its score. If you did an assignment after signing in at xyzhomework.com and its score is missing, send your instructor the message below, and add that you did the assignment after signing in at xyzhomework.com.

  4. Check that you have only one XYZ Homework account. You may have two if you ever chose Create Account when you already had an account, or signed up at xyzhomework.com with a different email. Your work may then be on the account that isn’t connected to your LMS course. See I think I have two XYZ Homework accounts.

  5. Check how you joined the class. Did you type a Course ID at xyzhomework.com, but your class also has XYZ Homework links in the LMS? Then your work may be in a course that isn’t linked to the LMS, and its scores may not reach the LMS gradebook. Tell your instructor (see below).

No score in XYZ Homework either?

Your instructor controls score visibility and release. A hidden score in XYZ Homework alone doesn’t tell you whether a grade has been sent to your LMS. When an assignment uses manual grade release, its score is held until your instructor releases it. Ask your instructor to check the assignment and your submission.

A blank, dash or 0 in your LMS can depend on submission status and course settings. Your instructor decides how unfinished work counts.

A score of 0 on part of a question

Some questions have parts your instructor grades by hand. Those parts count as 0 until your instructor grades them, so your LMS shows the lower score until then. If your assignment shows your score right after you submit each question, XYZ Homework also says “This question contains parts that must be graded by your instructor. They will show a score of 0 until they are graded.”

Who can fix it

  • You: submit the assignment, open your assignments from your LMS, and use only one XYZ Homework account.
  • Your instructor: can check your score in XYZ Homework and decide how to get it into the LMS gradebook. Instructor steps are in the XYZ Homework LMS troubleshooting guide. Your instructor also decides what to do about work done on a second account or in the wrong course.
  • XYZ Homework support: can help your instructor if the score still doesn’t reach the LMS, and can help sort out a second account. Your grades are your instructor’s decision.

Copy this to your instructor

My score for [assignment name] shows in XYZ Homework but not in our [LMS] gradebook. I submitted it on [date]. I did the work [from the [LMS] link / after signing in at xyzhomework.com]. Could you check it in XYZ Homework and let me know how it can get into the [LMS] gradebook? If you need help with that, XYZ Homework support can help.

If you joined the class with a Course ID, add: “I joined XYZ Homework with the Course ID instead of the LMS link, so my work may be in a course that isn’t connected to the LMS.”
