How to get from your list of courses to an assignment, move between questions, get help on a question, and check your grades. What you see depends on how you open XYZ Homework, and on the tools your instructor turned on for your course.

Get to your course

At xyzhomework.com

After you log in, your home page lists your classes under Courses you're taking. Click the course name to open it. On a phone the list is a plain list of course names; tap one.

To come back to that list from anywhere, use Home at the top of the page. On narrower screens, Home, User Settings, Support and Logout move into the menu under the person icon. The XYZ Homework logo takes you to the XYZ Homework website, not to your courses.

From your LMS

If your instructor added a link for each assignment in Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard or Moodle, open each assignment from its link. There is no XYZ Homework course list, course page, Log Out or Home link inside an assignment you opened this way.

If your instructor added one link to the whole XYZ Homework course instead, it opens the course page described below, without Log Out or Home. Open your assignments from there.

Go back through your LMS

When you've finished, go back to your course in the LMS. After you open an assignment from its link in your LMS, don't open your XYZ Homework course list (xyzhomework.com/imathas) in the same browser. That signs you out of XYZ Homework and shows the login page. To carry on, go back to your LMS and open the assignment from its link again.

Find an assignment

On the course page, each assignment's name is a link, with Due and the date underneath. Click the name to open it.

  • Units and chapters. Your instructor may group assignments. A group can be open, closed (click its title to open it), or a folder that opens its own page. Inside a folder, use Back or the course name at the top to return.
  • Calendar. If your instructor added a calendar, click a day to list that day's assignments in the box below it.
  • Progress icons. Each assignment's icon has a circle. Point at it to read what it means: "You haven't started this assessment yet", "You have some unanswered questions" or "All questions attempted".

Course tools

The column on the left of the course page links to Messages, Forums, Calendar, Course Map and Gradebook. Your instructor decides whether your course has Messages, Forums, Calendar and Gradebook, so a missing one is part of the course setup, not an error. Course Map is always there. It lists everything in the course so you can jump to it.

If you signed in at xyzhomework.com and you're on a phone, use the row of tabs across the top instead: Course, Log Out and whichever of Messages, Forums, Calendar and Gradebook your course has. Course Map isn't one of the tabs, so use a wider window or a computer for it.

Open an assignment

An assignment opens on a start screen first, even when you come back to it. The main button says Start, Resume (you already started) or Retake (you can take it again). Exit takes you back to the course page; it isn't there when you opened the assignment from your LMS.

If the assignment is timed, read Timed tests before you click Start.

Move between questions

Your instructor chooses how each assignment shows its questions, for example:

  • One question at a time. Above the question, the question navigation bar has a menu that lists every question with its status, and Previous and Next arrows. The first entry may be Intro / Instructions. When a question has no submit button, Next Question under it takes you on.
  • All at once. Scroll to each question. You can answer them in any order. If the assignment is split into pages, use the menu and the Previous and Next arrows above the questions, or Next Page at the bottom of a page.
  • With a video. Click Play video. The video stops at each question. When you've answered, the Continue video to button, followed by the name of the next part, starts the video again. The menu above lists the parts of the video and the questions, so you can jump to one.

Get help on a question

Under a question, Question Help: is followed by the help your instructor made available, such as Video, Read, Written Example, Message instructor or Post to forum. If there's no Question Help: line, that question has none.

The Use equation editor switch at the top of the assignment turns the equation editor on or off. See Typing math answers.

Submit and see how you did

Under each question the button is Submit or Check Answer (a multi-part question says Submit Part, Submit All Parts, Check Part Answer or Check All Parts). If there's no Submit or Check button under the questions, and you see only Next Question, Next Part or nothing, the whole assignment is submitted at once with Submit and End at the top. See What Submit, Check Answer and Save do.

If your instructor shows scores as you work, each answer gets a mark, and the line under the question says "Score on last try:" with your points. If scores are hidden, it says "Question submitted." Small icons with numbers in the question's header show how many tries and similar questions you have left; point at an icon to read what it counts. See Tries, versions and "Get a similar question".

Check your grades and messages

  • Gradebook (if your course has it) opens Grade Book Student Detail: each item with its Percent, Grade, Possible, Due Date and Feedback. It may also say how many LatePasses you have.
  • Messages (if your course has it) shows your messages. A red link such as New (2) beside it shows how many unread messages you have. You can send one with Send New Message when your instructor allows it.

If you open XYZ Homework from an LMS, your scores can be sent to the LMS gradebook. Your instructor sets up which assignments send scores, and when. If you open your assignments from links in your LMS, you can't get to the XYZ Homework course page or its Gradebook from those assignments, so check your grades in the LMS gradebook. If a score is missing there, see My XYZ Homework score isn't in my LMS gradebook.
